Manchester United’s youngsters made an assured start to this Champions League group game at Old Trafford. Teenage striker Danny Welbeck saw his shot blocked by Ibrahim Toraman while Ji-Sung Park’s long-range strike was parried by keeper Rustu Recber.
Midfielder Michael Fink had one optimistic long-range effort for the Turkish side before Nemanja Vidic headed wide when unmarked. The 23-match unbeaten home record of Manchester United in the Champions League stretching back to 2005 was ended by Besiktas who won 1-0 at Old Trafford last night.
Rodrigo Tello netted the only goal for the Turkish side after 20 minutes with a shot from distance. United, who had already qualified for the last 16, piled forward in search of an equaliser but were denied by some fine saves by Rustu Recber.
Mustafa Denizli’s players have won seven league games in a row, the last being a convincing 3-0 victory over leader Fenerbahçe, while Wednesday’s triumph at Manchester United in the Champions League will surely boost the squad’s morale.
Besiktas beat Manchester United 1-0 thanks to a first half goal from Roger Tello, ending its opponent’s 23-game unbeaten run at European games at home in the process. It was Besiktas’s first Champions League success outside Istanbul since beating Chelsea 2-0 in London in 2003. More significantly, it kept alive the team’s hopes of qualifying for the Europa League.
Besiktas is three points behind its final opponent CSKA Moscow, whom it faces at inönü Stadium next month. A victory better than 2-1 will see the Istanbul team through to the next round
